CLARION ICON & PIF FILES FOR WINDOWS 3.1

NOTE: It is recommended that you DON'T try to run Clarion from within
Windows 3.1 unless you have a 386-16mhz PC or faster with 4MB
or more RAM. See the Vol. 3, No. 5 Tech Journal for more info
under Ron Ogg's column on page 21.

To use these files, copy the CLARION.ICO (Icon) and *.PIF (Program
Information Files) to your Clarion sub-directory. Run Windows 3.1 and
and select the PIF Editor to check your settings. Open the Clarion PIF
files in your Clarion sub-directory one at a time. The default settings are
for Clarion to be installed in C:\CLARION. If this is not the case, make the
needed changes to the paths, and save the files. Close the PIF editor and
from the Program Group window from which you want to run Clarion (i.e.
Non-Windows Apps or maybe create a Clarion Group first) select FILE then NEW.
Make sure Program Item is checked before clicking OK. Don'type a Description
label for the item as it will be supplied by the PIF and TAB to the Command
Line field. Enter the full path to the PIF files (C:\CLARION\CLARxxx.PIF) or
click on Browse and select the CLARxxx.PIF from there, where xxx is replaced by
the PIF identifier. There are four PIF's supplied:

                CLARION.PIF for CLARION.COM - Main Menu Environment
                CLAREDT.PIF " CEDT.EXE - Editor
                CLARDES.PIF " CDES.EXE - Designer
                CLARPRO.PIF " CPRO.EXE - Processor/Debugger

Select the Change Icon button and again type the path or Browse to the
CLARION.ICO file. Do this for each PIF you want to use. That's it!

You can now run Clarion from within a Window in the Windows environment.
Use the sample PIF's to run Clarion, or a utility such as Designer, Editor,
Processor, or what ever you want. Remember though, each time you run one from
the Program Manager, Windows will start a NEW copy of the utility. So you can
have multiple Editors etc. running at one time. If you are careful this can be
a blessing. If not, you may get confused and possibly loose data, overwriting
the wrong copy. If you run DOS' SHARE.EXE before starting, and you do NOT
have the Clarion Program file attributes set to READ ONLY, then share will do
your house keeping for you and only let you run one copy of a utility at a
time. I've found setting the READ ONLY attribute to ON for utilities I do want
to run more than one copy of such as Editor, and keeping the rest set to OFF
to run one copy at a time works very well. Share will report a sharing
violation error and not load if you try to run a second copy of a program that
is not a network version or does not have a READ ONLY attribute. It's not a
good idea to run more than one copy of CLARION.COM at a time. It updates files
automatically which can cause problems.

The Clarion windows can be re-sized with the fonts option from the Control
menu (the little box in the top left corner of the window). You can also
quickly toggle between the Window and Full Screen with the Alt+Enter key
combination. To cut/paste TEXT between your windows, you can use any word
processor (set to use the Courier 10 Font) for formatting and spell checking,
etc., then select the text and use Ctrl+Insert to copy to the clipboard and
Shift+Insert to Paste from the clipboard. An entire screen can be copied to
the clipboard with the Print Screen key (non-Windows apps. like Clarion must be
in text mode for this to work), or Atl+Print Screen for a copy of only the
active window's image. You can then Paste the image to a Clarion screen for
use as a template in Designer (I haven't tried this from Editor). I say
template because all colors and tracks need to be retraced using the
Designer screen tools to make them stick, and fields need to be created in the
normal way also of course, but it is much faster and more accurate than
starting each from scratch. Especially if there is a need to overlay a screen
or part of it precisely. Enjoy!
